LongBoardLarry Night Race

LongBoardLarry Night Race
Scratchboard drawing with color added in Photoshop

A Poster I did for LongBoardLarry a friend of mine who makes longboards for a living. His annual night race is coming in just a few weeks. Hopefully he'll get a great turnout like last year. It's an awesome event, I can't wait.

What Rocks? I Don't Know What You Are Talking About?!

1114 Republican Street
05 Micron and watercolor on small "Moleskine"

My friend Gabi is whining over on his blog, Seattle Sketcher, about some rocks that he says I threw at him while we were sketching. Well, if I did throw a rock or two, and I'm not saying I did, it would have been because he was finished with his drawing in about half the time of mine. He's a whiner.

Next time I'm bringing water balloons.

Oh, Gabi mentioned that I did a caricature of him. I also got another one today while I was at it. Sorry, Gabi hope you're not too mad.

This character is based on my father. The whole story is really a metaphor for the worst parts of him. I won't go into to much detail here but if you're curious and you see me, ask me about it. I'd be happy to tell you about it. Pretty harsh huh? I think it's important to write and draw things that you are passionate about. Otherwise, they turn out stale and lifeless.

This is the first time I've done a color sketch of any of the characters from that story. It's really amazing how much some color can bring it to life in ways you don't get in black and white.

1210 Republican Demolition

1210 Republican Demolition
05 Micron on small Moleskine with watercolor added later

I went sketching with Gabi again. This time we went a few blocks away where Gabi had heard that two of the oldest houses in the South Lake Union neighborhood we about to be demolished. Sure enough, these two houses were already in the process of being torn down. You can't see it here but the whole back end these homes is gone. It's kind of a shame they have to tear down old houses like this. Half way through this sketch it occurred to me that our drawings will probably be the last that are ever done to these two homes.

I was happy with the way this sketch turned out. I feel like I'm getting better at this.

Make sure you check out Gabi's blog here.

Discovery Park Lighthouse

Discovery Park Lighthouse

After an hour at the skatepark this morning I had to be over at Discovery Park to help out with a Boy Scout nature walk. I took a few minutes near the end to sketch the lighthouse on the point there.

All this feels so foreign to me. It's not that I don't know how to draw, I draw all the time. Most of the time though, I just make it up. I'll keep at it and in the mean time I will probably be posting some just for fun cartoony sketches as well.

Natty-Bug

I was re-reading a favorite graphic novel of mine the other night and wondering what some of the creatures might look like in color. This critter is from Earthboy Jacobus by Doug TenNapel.
